In accordance with the Long-Term Development Plan of the University of Lampung, to build the Faculty of Basic Sciences that can support the university as the center of the development of science, then on May 6, 1986 Rector Decree Number 34/KPTS/R/1986 concerning the Establishment of the Preparation Committee for the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (PFMIPA) of the University of Lampung. On February 13, 1989 the Director General of Higher Education Decree Number: 07/DIKTI/KEP/1989 and 1989 and No. 08/Dikti/Kep/1989 concerning the Formation of Biology and Chemical Study Programs. Administratively the two study programs are under the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lampung, but in its implementation directly responsible to the Rector (Rector's Decree No.111/KPTS/R/1989).

Furthermore, in accordance with the Chancellor Decree of the University of Lampung Number: 111/KPTS/R/1989, the organization and work procedures of the FMIPA preparation committee are more enhanced and reinforced. The organizational structure of the FMIPA preparation committee consists of the chairman, deputy chairman, secretary I and II, the administrative section and the head of the study program. The main task of the faculty opening committee is to organize education and teaching first (S1) from the Biology and Chemistry Study Program in order to prepare FMIPA. The progress of a faculty must be supported by an appropriate laboratory. Laboratory formation in FMIPA preparation. This is based on the Rector's Decree Number: 10/KPTS/R/1990, which then the laboratory was further developed with the Rector Decree of the University of Lampung Number: 19/KPTS/R/1991. The FMIPA Opening Preparation Committee is also tasked with preparing for the opening of two study programs, namely Physics Study Program and Mathematics Study Program.

Based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education on December 15, 1994 Number: 306/DIKTI/KEP/1994 Biology and Chemical Study Programs are upgraded to majors. Furthermore, with the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No.0334/O/1995 concerning the Opening of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Lampung, then since November 15, 1995 FMIPA officially established at the University of Lampung. Furthermore, Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Ministry of Education and Culture No: 55/Dikti/Kep/1998 dated February 23, 1998 concerning the Establishment of Mathematics and Physics Study Programs FMIPA Unila. In 1999 the Director General of Higher Education Decree Number: 12/Dikti/Kep/1999 was issued, January 13, 1999 concerning the establishment of the Mathematics Department and Physics Department at FMIPA Unila. Then on the stairs June 3, 2005 a S1 Computer Science/Computer System Study Program was established and on the 13th of the 2007 Pebrui in accordance with the SK 317/D/T/T/2007 PS Geophysics. However, because there is a Circular of the Director General of Dikti 163/DIKTI/KEP/2007 Decree on the Structuring and Codification of Study Programs, the Rector of the University of Lampung took a policy that PS Geophysics was transferred to FT with the name PS Geophysics Engineering in accordance with the Rector's Decree Number 128/H26/DT/2009.
